Get ready: how to build an abatement plan

How to build an abatement plan

This step will describe how to build your decarbonization roadmap by leveraging marginal abatement cost curves (MACCs), practically evaluate lever implementation, build and test scenarios, and implement your abatement plan.

1. Understand cost and impact

This section describes MACCs and how to use them to identify the cost and emissions reduction impact of different levers.

2. Evaluate levers based on ease of implementation, timeline, and other factors

MACCs inform two crucial characteristics of levers – cost and impact. But there are other important non-cost-related factors for lever implementation, including dependence on other stakeholders, resources needed, supply constraints, brand impact, timeline, and effect on other planetary boundaries, which may need to be considered in selecting which levers to implement and when.

3. Build and test strategic scenarios

Building on the first two sections in this step, you will gain an appreciation for different strategies to plan for lever implementation (e.g., lowest-cost first approach, an easiest-to-implement first etc.).

4. Put the decarbonization roadmap into practice

This section will address key steps, from sequencing initiatives to scaling up, that can help your company ensure effective implementation of your decarbonization roadmap.
